Latest Development in Surveillance Equipment

Fingerprint recognition had been subjected to high rate of error. Actually, the fingerprints were converted into digital data in the form of brief numeric description. These were used in banks and various science labs for identification. However, this recognition failed in one out of ten attempts.

A new technology that has come is DNA fingerprint recognition. This primarily matched the DNA code of the maker. However, this too suffered from a certain drawback. The DNA code of 2 identical twins could be similar. DNA fingerprints were less accurate compared to the ordinary method of fingerprint recognition.

Handwriting is one of the most common forms of determining identity. Similarly, a signature made by person is one the most common forms of recognition. This has been used in biometrics too. The concept of digital signature has become very popular. In fact, the process of digital signature for filing of electronic tax returns has been made mandatory in India. Credit cards and debit card also use digital signature. When we insert the ATM card in the machine, our signature is also verified for authorizing the access.

Voice recognition and voice analysis are one the latest developments in biometric surveillance. Analog voice signal are digitized and converted to electronic audio waves. Voice recognition is analyzed on the basis of pitch and amplitude. The individual’s voice is recorded in a voice box and when a person wishes to seek access, his voice is compared to that stored and compared for authentication and authorization. However, this form is less suited for portable use as the background noise often interrupts in the correct voice recognition.

The most viable options preferred for portable use are - Iris recognition and Facial Recognition. Iris recognition uses the individual’s iris which is unique and almost impossible to replicate. Facial recognition is used to match the facial patterns. Both these forms are the latest technology and provide a high level of security.
