Closed circuit television is a device used for surveillance. It is very commonly used, both for residential and commercial purposes. Closed circuit television is actually a device with which we can view or record pictures but not broadcast the same. It was actually invented for the purpose of security in banks. Toady, it has developed so much that it has become a rather inexpensive device used for security in more spheres and everyday life.

Closed circuit television has evolved in last 10 years and its use has become widespread.  In UK, majority of the town and cities have been linked to the police department by the use of cameras. The reason behind the rapid growth of the use of cameras is monitoring over all sorts of activities, especially crime. However, there is some dubiousness as to how much this has helped in reduction of crime. It is debatable to say whether Closed circuit television is used to reduce crime or it is used as a social control element.

Most departmental stores and even small stores have started using closed circuit television to prevent kleptomaniacs or other notorious customers who intend to purchase without paying. The store owner can also ensure that his stock levels are not needlessly reduced or the prospective customer does not damage the article or manhandle the same. Closed circuit television has also helped to identify many crooks who have managed to break in to stores at odd hours and injure the storekeeper and rob him of his daily collection.

Closed circuit televisions have become increasingly popular as a home security solution. A camera along with an intercom is fit outside the entrance of the house or building with the TV placed in side the house at a convenient location. This helps in prohibiting trespassers or other unwanted people. The intercom is used to talk to the person who seeks to enter the resident.
